CENTREVILLE WHARF
April 5, 2007 - Centreville, Maryland - The Town of Centreville has entered into a contract to purchase the Wharf property in order to create a gateway from its historic waterfront to the town center. The Town is currently performing environmental assessments of the site during a feasibility period, to assure that the Town is fully aware of the current environmental conditions at the property.
"The Town Council devoted considerable time and resources to negotiating an offer for this property," said Mary T. McCarthy, Council President. "The Centreville Wharf presents a unique opportunity for the town and according to the Centreville Community Plan, should incorporate "a mixed use waterfront development that could include an improved public landing, marina facility, passive waterfront park area, gathering area for public festivals and events and a small restaurant and tourist/boat supply store." The plan adds that, "This type of environmentally sensitive redevelopment would allow Centreville to capitalize on its currently underutilized waterfront/wharf area and greatly expand tourism opportunities. This redevelopment should be directly linked to the Town waterfront trail system and serve as a central focal point between the park anchors at either end of the trail."
"The town is looking forward to working with an array of stakeholders, including members of the community, the Queen Anne's County Government and the State of Maryland, to explore the best options for this property," added McCarthy. "I am absolutely thrilled that the town has taken this important step in preserving our historic waterfront for the future enjoyment of our citizens."
